The night office of Matins has been sung during the darkness of night since the earliest days of the Christian faith. Cantors lead this service of psalms and lessons, in preparation for the great act of worship to follow.
At 11.30pm, the lights in the church are extinguished and only candlelight remains. Each verse of the carol Silent Night is sung by our choir in different languages, to offer a welcome to visitors from all over the world. Mass begins with a procession and the Blessing of the Crib, and continues with much-loved carols and hymns, and readings from Holy Scripture.
